WebHead out on this 13.6-mile out-and-back trail near Ouray, Colorado. Generally considered a challenging route. This is a popular trail for off-road driving, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of day. The best times to visit this trail are March through October. Dogs are welcome and may be off-leash in some areas. WebLength: depending where you start on Government Basin Road, 3.5 miles one way if hiking the road; 1.5 miles one way is starting at Virginius Mine. I chose to hike the mountain from Government Basin because it is closer to my house than Imogene Pass Road + I also I ran the Imogene Pass Run 4 days ago and was kind of sick of that road.

Lots of Jeeps were on the road today. Some Wilde flowers are blooming near the waterfalls. The lake was still partially frozen. Beautiful. If you take the trail on the left up to blue lakes… there are some slippery snow patches there.

If you do have high clearance 4WD, you can drive up the Governor Basin road about as far as the Virginius Mine remains, about 2 miles up. Otherwise, be prepared to walk up the same road.
