Ether c-o stretch
WebThe 1050–1010 cm −1 band is in the same region as the C—O stretch band in methanol, or the highest C—C—O IR frequency in primary alcohols. Diphenyl ether has only the aryl-O band at 1240 cm−1 and has no O-CH 2 band in the 1050–1010 cm −1 region. WebElectron-withdrawing groups lead to a C=O stretch at larger wavenumbers, whereas electron-donating groups have the opposite effect. The resonance structure on the right is less favourable if X = Cl. Hence, the inductive (-I) effect of an electronegative substituent shortens and strengthens C=O bond. The C=O frequency becomes larger.

WebA carboxylic acid functional group combines the features of alcohols and ketones because it has both the O-H bond and the C=O bond. Therefore carboxylic acids show a very strong and broad band covering a wide range between 2800 and 3500 cm-1 for the O-H stretch. WebThe (Wiberg) bond order for the C=O bond can be derived from the wavefunctions. Its value is 1.635 for ester, and 1.681 for ketone (CCSD/6-311G (d,p)) or 1.766/1.848 (ωB97XD/aug-cc-pvQZ). This is the opposite to that inferred from the carbonyl stretch, and hence favours the blue/red arrows over the green arrows.

WebThe carbonyl stretch C=O of a carboxylic acid appears as an intense band from 1760-1690 cm-1. The exact position of this broad band depends on whether the carboxylic acid is saturated or unsaturated, dimerized, or has internal hydrogen bonding. O–H stretch from …
